ShutterStutter, first meeting!

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

ShutterStutter was originally conceived as an online community for photographers, where pictures and information could be shared, and where networking takes place.

That never got off the ground as it was a much larger project that I was capable of, and goddamit I’m still having trouble saving up the last thousand to buy a new camera.

Around the same time, I started this blog. Which needed a name. And I’m not savvy enough to come up with two good names in a week, so, voila!

Now, ShutterStutter (the network) has come back to life! It even has a website.

My graduation (finally!)

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Today, I’ve finally graduated. Scary feeling, to not have uni as an excuse for being at the bottom of the corporate ladder and being dirt poor. It’s official, up up and away into the big bad world.

And these are the geeks I did it with - six bloody years! We started together, separated for a year to study overseas (Italy, Mexico, France and China), and now we’re graduating together.

My parents are such (cute) dorks…

On a funny note, they lost one of my certificates! I have a double bachelors in Arts and Design. My Arts one had to be hunted down after the ceremony.

Stefan Sagmeister at AGIdeas!

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

The Sagmeister (he should have a t-shirt) will be at AGIdeas 2009 in Melbourne. AGIdeas is an annual three day conference , 5th to 7th of May, with talks from internationally renowned designers.

For my non-design readers, or designers who have been living under a rock, Stefan Sagmeister is the current ‘it’ man of typography. I’ve blogged about him before.

I’m still tossing up going, but the cost of it will be too much I think. And I can’t justify it, as there is only one photographer speaking and he doesn’t even do portraiture.

Sagmeister on design and happiness:

Sagmeister on things he has leared.

On a side note, I have the worst belly ache right now. Gawd, what did I eat?!

“I Will…” Project at the MCA a success!

Monday, March 30th, 2009

It’s been a busy busy month, and looking to be an equally busy one ahead. While I’m thankful that freelancing is turning out to be a full time job, I am lamenting the loss of a couple of weekdays a week to work on my personal projects. I’m trying to squeeze these in on weeknights and around errands on weekends, and incidently, my blog is suffering as well. Sorry!

Last weekend was the Oxfam Australia curated Footprints exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art, and I’m very happy to report that the opening went off without a hitch. I had an interactive piece, and I got some hilarious responses.

Thanks muchly to Will from Deep Surface, who was a sponsor for this project and who also took these photos.

For the complete collection of polaroids, visit www.iwillproject.org

The exhibition space was dotted with these newspaper tulips - watch your eco-footprint, geddit geddit? I thought it was very smart.

My prints…

Viewers were encouraged to write their ‘I will…’ on paper, take a polaroid of themselves, and pin it up on the cork board. Here is Chapel, also from Deep Surface, putting on his game face.

Ta-da!

I had to get the action started…

And here are a few of my favourite polaroid responses from the day. To browse all of them, click over to www.iwillproject.org.

Moran Prize Winners 2009

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

The awards night for the Moran Painting and Photography Prizes were on Tuesday night. I dolled up and crossed my fingers, but alas, no prize money for me this year :( I’m happy about being selected as a finalist, but well, one always wishes for more.

I was kicking myself for not bringing a camera, but figured it won’t be too hard to find photos on the net later. These are courtesy of smh.com.au.

This image won the AUD80,000 grand prize, phew. Dean Sewell, A Dry Argument.

The man himself.

And this is artist Ben Quilty with his winning entry of Jimmy Barnes. There But For The Grace Of God Go I No. 2. This has won him AUD150,000. (!)

I also met a talented young lady on the night, and winner of the photographic prize in the Years 11 to 12 category. Rachel emailed me the day before the awards night, and we were lucky enough to bump into eachother on the night.

This is her winning entry, Planes are raining down on us.

Head over to her blog, I still love your tits, to see more photos of the awards night. Maybe ask her about the name of her blog too :).

I Will… @ the MCA Sydney

Friday, March 6th, 2009

I’m exhibiting at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney!

You a invited to attend Footprints, an exhibition by 25 young artists and designers around Australia. It is environmentally themed and coordinated by Oxfam Australia.

Here’s a sneak peek of my work:

March is turning out to be a busy but fruitful month for one Anna Zhu. I have works in both the State Library and the MCA :)

Help me exhibit at the MCA!

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

Dear friends and readers,

Please help me exhibit at the MCA!

Footprints is an exhibition by 25 young artists and designers. Environmentally themed, it is coordinated by Oxfam Australia, and will open at the Museum of Contemporary Art Sydney on the 22nd of March 2009.

I’ve been selected as a participating artist, but I’m in a bit of a pickle: the cost of film, processing, printing and mounting is adding up to around $800. Money which I do no have.

What I need:

- a photo lab willing to make four 27inx36in photo prints
- a framer willing to flush mount above prints onto craft wood
- around 15 packs of 600 instant polaroid film
- a big cork board
- SPONSORS

How you can help:

- suggest a sponsor! Is your workplace looking to help out a worthy cause? Let me know and I can send them a proposal
- become a sponsor! Every little bit helps - and your name will be shown on my artists statement next to my display.
- any leads/advice on how to get sponsorship is welcome

What sponsors get:

- logo/name on my artist statement, displayed next to my work in the gallery.
- exposure of your logo in the Museum of Contemporary Art
- indirect affiliation with Oxfam Australia and MCA, being seen as ‘environmentally conscious’ and ’supportive of the arts’.

Your help may tip the balance of whether or not I’ll be able to exhibit - and I really would like to exhibit.

Please contact me ASAP with your suggestions/sponsorship - the artwork needs to go to print next week :S

Thank you all in advance!

Anna
