Sydney Festival, Breakdancing & Spiders
Thursday, December 11th, 2008Here are some odd bits and bobbles that I’ve collected for some weeks, but didn’t think they warranted a whole post to themselves.
First of all, Sydney Festival is coming! Yay! In preparation for Festival Night on the 10th of January, the organisers are holding a mass dance class tomorrow morning (13th) 11am, at Hyde Park. How awesome is that?! We’ll be taught a dance, The Sydney, that will be performed by an estimated 250,000 people on festival night. So grab your friends and come join the fun!

Speaking of dancing, this little gem showed up on my facebook feed today. Mmm, there’s something about men in uniforms. These boys are a bit on the silly side, but gosh, they must have iron thighs!
And now for something completely different. This made my day when I read it - it’s just too cute! Click on the image for the rest of this long email ping pong.
Canadian Film Festival
Saturday, November 15th, 2008How exciting! I love film festivals. SFF is my favourite time of the year, and I’ve over gorged on wonderful films to the point of being physically ill more than once.
The Canadian Film Festival is a much smaller affair, but the selection is still impressive. It is on from Nov 27th till Dec 2nd. Unfortunately I will be insanely busy in that week, but I’m going to try and catch a few screenings nevertheless.
One movie that I’m making sure to catch is Global Metal. If anyone is interested in coming along, leave me a comment! Sat 29 Nov, 6:30pm, Utopia Records.
Stuck looks pretty good too. Sun 30 Nov, 8:30pm, Dendy Opera Quays.
And maybe Young People Fucking. I might just download this one though
Fri 28 Nov, 8:30pm, Bobby’s Pole Studio.
Bakehouse 2008
Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008Bakehouse is an annual event that aims to bridge the gap between the arts and disabilities sector. It’s a week-long affair, with seminars on such varied topics like film-making, stilt walking, and yoga, and is open to everyone - disabled or not.
I was fortunate enough to photographed Bakehouse 08 last week. I have never had much contact with people with disabilities, so was a bit awkward at the start. I usually like to have a strong sense of interaction from the subjects I’m photographing, but I didn’t really know how to go about this at first.
I learnt a lot from watching the carers interact with their charges, and as the week progressed my shots improved. I really enjoyed shooting Bakehouse, so fingers crossed for a Bakehouse 2009!
This is Digby - he love robots and is fantastic at break dancing.

Yoga was a bit too much for some.

Everyone enjoys masks.

The sensory seminar was a bit hit.

Live drawing at Dr. Sketchy’s was the classy entertainment…

…or so we thought.
