I’ve never heard of StartUp Weekend before I was commissioned to photograph this – but what a great event!
StartUp Weekend is: “a global grassroots movement of active and empowered entrepreneurs who are learning the basics of founding startups and launching successful ventures. It is the largest community of passionate entrepreneurs with over 400 past events in 100 countries around the world in 2011.
“All Startup Weekend events follow the same basic model: anyone is welcome to pitch their startup idea and receive feedback from their peers. Teams organically form around the top ideas (as determined by popular vote) and then it’s a 54 hour frenzy of business model creation, coding, designing, and market validation. The weekends culminate with presentations in front of local entrepreneurial leaders with another opportunity for critical feedback.”
I don’t think I’ve ever been in a room so full of talented, energetic and motivated individuals – it was an invigorating experience. Can’t wait for the next challenge, so I can attend as a participant!
Jumped off a 14 hour flight commute from Kyoto last Thursday (a pre-wedding film and photography trip! We’ll share soon :) and dived straight into this beauty of a ball held by the University of Technology Sydney’s Pharmacy faculty – their inaugural Innovative Pharmacist of The Year ball! The Great Hall looked stunning, and the food was eye-rolling yummy. All in all, a successful night of celebrating achievements and networking, and beautiful gowns.

A small selection of shots from an exclusive refresher for UTS Business School MBA, executive MBA and specialist postgrad programs graduates – an afternoon of insightful speakers, workshops and lots of networking, all on the 33rd floor of Ernest & Young at World Square Sydney.
This year’s Indigenous Literacy Day was Wednesday the 5th of September. UTS’s Jumbunna House of Indigenous Learning, UTS Library and the NFP Sydney Story Factory, invited primary and secondary school children from all over Sydney to experience a day of storytelling and interactive learning, finishing with a barbeque for our hungry little participants.
This is a wonderful intro to the work of Sydney Story Factory.
My minor brush with celebrity yesterday, with MP Peter Garrett who officially opened SDN‘s new childcare centre in Milperra.
Here’s some creative inspiration as you wind down the week!
Last Wednesday was the second Shapeshifters talk for UTSpeaks. Inspiring as always, the night welcomed guest speakers Professor Dick Rijken, Craig Davis and Dr Theresa Anderson. They discussed how creative industries embrace multiple disciplines from design to technology and science, driving innovation and the creative economy.
For those who missed out, the talk should be up online soon and for those who still haven’t seen the first talk to you can watch it here.
This Wednesday 18th is National Youth Homelessness Matters Day and Kate and I were very proud to finally release our short doco “Bee’s Journey” last night for YHMD at Redfern Community Centre – how can you go wrong with popcorn, fairy floss, giant Jenga and Connect4?
All photos by Kate :)
